Treatments for Pregnant Women during their First & Second Trimester

Pregnancy is usually divided into three trimesters based on a 42-week gestation, viz three months (14 weeks) for each trimester. Since the norm for Dental care for regular dental maintenance is a six-month window, every pregnant woman is expected to seek dental treatment at some point during their pregnancy.

Dental care has been proven to not only be safe and effective during pregnancy but also important to promote thorough oral health. It is imperative that dental treatments be coordinated among obstetric and dental health care providers.

Dental treatments, while pregnant, such as cavity fillings and crowns, should be done immediately to reduce the chance of infection. If dental treatments are to be done during pregnancy, the second trimester is ideal. Once they reach the third trimester, it may be very difficult to lie on their backs for a long period of time.

Preventive dental treatment while pregnant is very crucial to avoid oral infections such as gum/periodontal disease, which has been linked to premature deliveries. Babies who are born prematurely may risk a range of health conditions including cerebral palsy and problems with eyesight and hearing.

Estimates suggest that up to 18 out of every 100 premature births may be triggered by periodontal disease, which is a chronic infection of the gums. Appropriate dental treatment for the expecting mother between the first and second trimester might reduce the risk of premature birth.

It is also advisable to avoid this complication by planning and getting prepared in advance. If and when you are planning on getting pregnant, it may be a good time see your dentist, to minimise your risk of gum disease.

Here is an important piece of information for Pregnancy Dental Care:

No calcium is lost from the teeth for the baby’s development, but it is possible that the mother may lose some of her bone density to help supply the baby’s skeletal requirements.

Consult the Dentist before your second trimester to ensure a smooth and safe term.
