Taking Care of the Milk Teeth

Pediatric Care for Milk Teeth

The Rise & Fall of the Milk teeth is a fun part of everyone’s childhood, starting from the stories of a fairy turning our fallen tooth to gold coins to getting lucky the day the milk tooth falls. We have all had our share of fears and laughs thanks to our milk teeth. But often we do not understand the importance of taking care of the milk teeth. More often than not people dismiss the idea of consulting a Doctor when it comes to a child’s dental problems as they believe that there is no point in ‘wasting time’ on teeth that are meant to fall off.

What we do not understand is the fact that, just like the seeds sown yesterday form the roots of tomorrow, the quality and alignment of the milk teeth makes way for the permanent teeth that grows afterwards. So what people often do is avoid the simple and cheap check-ups to eventually end up gooing for expensive corrective treatments and painful procedures.

Do not make this mistake for your child. A smile can not only be a deal maker but also a deal breaker for a lot of young people. Perfection is the mantra these days but don’t let it happen through a more painful and long procedure when you have the choice of making it happen with a little extra care.

Your child may not want to see a Dentist for obvious fears, but at Dr. Smilez we assure you that it will be a problem only till you meet us for the first time.

With our well experienced and friendly staff, no child will have reasons to not meet our dentists again.

By the time your kid turns 14, the milk teeth should give way to the permanent teeth. If this does not happen then consulting a dentist is necessary. When the permanent teeth start emerging they wear off the roots of the milk teeth. Thus the milk teeth lose their support in the bone and become movable. It is not a cause of worry but a sign that soon it is going to fall off & give way to the permanent teeth.

Until a child’s second birthday make sure that the child only brushes once a day. However from the second birthday onwards the child must learn the habit of brushing teeth twice a day.

Anything except for water when left overnight in an infant’s mouth will cause decay. During sleep, saliva levels in the mouth goes down and sugar containing liquids increase their effect on the teeth. Acid remaining on the tooth enamel causes extensive decay.

A child’s toothbrush must be selected carefully with a short and thick handle and soft bristles to avoid cuts due to harsh rubbing. Also get a children’s toothpaste for your child, as adult toothpaste and children’s toothpaste differ in their contents, they are only suitable for their concerned counterparts.

A question that is often asked is when parents should take their child to the Dental Clinic for the first time. Ideally, it should be at the time when the first set of milk teeth have started emerging. Preventive knowledge at that time can help in avoiding a lot of dental damage.

Next time your toddler proudly flaunts his/her milk teeth don’t forget to take care of them by following the above steps and with professional help from our pediatric experts at Dr.Smilez.
