Post Operative Instructions for Conscious Sedation

What is Conscious Sedation?

It is a combination of medicine to help the patient relax and also doubles as an anesthetic. In this state, the patient is able to verbally communicate during the procedure to inform the Doctor of any discomfort but is sedated enough to not feel the pain. Unlike deep sedation, this procedure can let you get back to your regular routine immediately. Having said that, there are some post operative instructions for conscious sedation that needs to be strictly followed.

  • Do not drive for 24 hours after sedation.
  • Do not operate any hazardous devices for 24 hours.
  • A responsible person should be with the patient until he/she has fully recovered from the effects of the sedation.
  • Do not climb stairs unattended; stay on the ground floor until fully recovered.
  • No diet restrictions
  • Drink plenty of fluids as soon as possible.
  • Patient may sleep for a long time or may be alert when he/she leaves. Attend to both the alert or sleepy patient in the same manner; don’t trust him/her alone.
  • Escort should always hold patient’s arm when walking

Conscious Sedation is administered to people who have to undergo minor surgeries. Regardless of the type of sedation, there will always be an anesthetic that will be administered on the area which has to be numbed to operate on.
