Natural Treatments for Mouth Ulcers

Minor Mouth Ulcers are easily treatable when they occur rarely and disappear soon. A few simple and natural treatments for mouth ulcers are all it takes to help you get rid of these inflammations.

Mouth Ulcers can be painful and disrupts basic functions like eating and talking. Going about with one’s usual routine with a constant nagging sensation is tough and so here are a few points to reduce the pain immediately.

Solanum nigrum or Black Nightshade (known as Manathakkali in Tamil) is a small plant whose leaves can be chewed or sucked to quickly heal the ulcers. These leaves are also used to make spinach but consuming them after washing them in boiled water gives the best results.

Coconut Milk or Oil can be used to heal the ulcer inflammations as both of them have anti-microbial and soothing qualities. And they are very tasty too! As an alternative, you could chew a piece of tender coconut and direct the milk/juice towards the mouth ulcer.

Raw Organic Honey with its anti-inflammatory & anti-bacterial properties can provide a soothing coat over your canker and give temporary relief. It also helps accelerate the healing process. Directly apply a dollop of honey over the ulcer 2-3 times a day; you can add a pinch of turmeric for best results.

Aloevera Gel is a brilliant coolant and hence a good option to treat mouth ulcers. You can either apply ‘Natural’ aloe gel on the ulcer or consume a few spoons of edible aloe gel or juice to heal the ulcers.

Tulasi (holy basil) or Basil Leaves  can also be consumed to relieve the ulcers. Wash them well or add them to boiling water for a few seconds before consuming them. Use the boiled water to rinse your mouth when it is lukewarm.

These are just a handful of tips to help you alleviate the mouth ulcer pain and to quicken the healing process. Ensure to follow at least one of these regularly for a couple of days. It is also advisable to try them just before going to sleep as they work most effectively when there is no disturbance in the form of talking or eating.

Mouth ulcers are easy to treat when you follow the right precautions. Medications can be prescribed if they persist for longer than 7-10 days. The previous blog describes the Causes of Mouth Ulcer and the basic medications to get rid of it.
