How Important are Vitamins & Calcium for Teeth?

Visiting the Dentist regularly & maintaining the teeth are not the only aspects of Dental Care. As important as external care is, supplementing it with a healthy diet is also necessary. Avoiding sugary food, biting & chewing on apples, carrots and staying clear from Garlic/onions helps improve oral health. Similarly, consuming food items that can provide vitamins & calcium for teeth are also essential.

Vitamins & Calciums for Teeth:

Bones require calcium supplement for good strength & density. It is known that Jaw bones lose their mass earlier than the rest of the body which results in loss of teeth. It is, therefore, essential to eat calcium rich food items to keep the teeth strong and healthy.

Vitamins prevent gum (periodontal) problems; Vitamin D especially helps in absorption of the Calcium to the bones. Vitamin C helps prevent gum inflammation and provides immunity to the mouth. The acidic nature of the citrus fruits rich in Vitamin C can erode the tooth enamel if not rinsed properly. Hence, rinsing the mouth immediately after consuming them is very important.

Vitamin A helps in healing the inflamed gums. Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant that helps in tissue healing.  Vitamin B deficiency causes a toothache and should be supplemented in the lingual form — under the tongue, for optimal absorption.

In addition to these, Phosphorus also increases the bone-strengthening benefits.

Calcium Dairy foods such as cheese and yoghurt, brown rice, oranges, cabbage, beans, broccoli, salmon, peas.
Vitamin C Citrus Fruits, Kiwi, Bell Peppers, Brussels Sprouts, Strawberry, Cantaloupe
Vitamin D Natural sunlight, dairy products, eggs, some cereals, oily fish (tuna, sardines etc).
Phosphorus  Cereals, wheat germ, soy beans, almonds and other nuts, meat, poultry, fish, eggs, grapes, citrus fruit, cucumbers, tomatoes.

Calcium supplemented through diet might sometimes not be enough for kids and the elderly. Dentists would prescribe calcium supplements along with Vitamin D to increase the bone strength, in turn resulting in healthier teeth.

Usually, the best vitamins can be found through natural means and supplements will only be required for special cases – kids, pregnant women and the elderly. Follow a healthy diet pattern and provide the nutrients that your teeth require. Stay Dental Healthy with Dr.Smilez.
