A few years back, an Indian Researcher studied the behavior of Dairy Products with our teeth. A study group divided into 3 were made to have cheese, milk and sugar-free yogurt. And guess what they deduced at the end of the research? Among all the dairy products, Cheese can help prevent cavities.
The effect of any food item on our teeth is measured by the pH of the mouth after consumption. Decrease in pH means the chances of tooth erosion are higher. Both milk and sugar-free yogurt did not cause any change in the pH of the mouth. But the pH increased with time for the people who consumed Cheese.
This definitely implied that cheese has anti-cavity properties. Also, the chewing increased saliva levels which again meant an increase of the pH.
The higher the pH, the more alkaline the surface of the tooth is and this is what helps prevent the erosion of the tooth enamel. Cheese also releases some chemical compounds while chewing that can reduce the risk of tooth damage.
While saying that cheese helps to prevent cavities, we must also remember that while consumed in excess nothing can save you from the bacteria that is ready to attack your teeth all day and night. Consume healthy food items and wash your mouth after every meal or snack.
