INVISIBLE PRECISION
For Clear Aligners, teeth are scanned digitally, or impressions were taken, and an image of the patient’s teeth is sent to the manufacturer in Dubai. The aligners are then made and mailed to the practitioner, who dispenses two or three aligners at a time.
Patients need to return about every six to eight weeks for a new set of aligners.
“I’ve tackled some very difficult cases with great success,” said Dr. Shyam, an orthodontist with Dr. Smilez. “We’re human, doing (metal) braces by hand. With Clearpath, teeth are moved incrementally with the computer. It’s a constant force over the course of treatment. I don’t think we can move the teeth (with metal braces) with quite that precision.”
The clear plastic aligners also appeal to adults for their ease of cleaning. While traditional braces are known to trap food and cause tooth decay or discoloration if hygiene isn’t top notch, clear aligners must be removed before eating, when brushing teeth, and can be rinsed easily. “You can speak, you can drink liquids with them. I have several dozen patients who are teachers and they speak in the class all day and they don’t have a problem.”
MATURITY IS THE KEY
The patients’ clear plastic aligners fit the teeth intimately. The aligners gradually and gently shift teeth into place, based on the exact movements a dentist or orthodontist plans out. How many aligners a patient goes through depends on the severity of their case.
These days, patients are completing the therapy more quickly than in the past. Few treatments last more than two years, and many are finished within a year and a half.
The aligners can work for children, but practitioners say maturity is key. This type of braces requires compliance to be effective. The aligners need to be worn for at least 22 hours daily.
